Strategic Objectives

SYNBIOLOGY’s first objective is to provide a sector analysis to assist the EC NEST Programme in furthering its understanding of the European synthetic biology sector and, in particular, advancing the Programme’s knowledge of:

  • Which are the main actors in the sector;
  • What are the different types of actors (for instance universities, research institutes, research companies, production companies);
  • What is the geographic distribution of these actors;
  • How is research information disseminated between these actors;
  • What funding and support services are currently available.

Research in synthetic biology is conducted globally. In particular, there are a number of North American institutions that are at the forefront of the new research. These institutions include well-known universities such as MIT, Duke and Harvard. In addition, a number of North American funding agencies already provide support to individual synthetic biology projects.

This global, and especially North American, aspect to the synthetic biology sector will be used to provide excellent information and learning experiences for European development of synthetic biology. These project results will be provided to the Commission through the dissemination activities discussed in the project’s second objective below.

The second objective of the project is to disseminate the sector information and analysis to all interested stakeholders and the general public. This will be done through providing a workshop and seminar, a project website and a series of other dissemination activities, including press releases, structured presentations and brochures.

Benefits include

  • Developing a commonly accepted definition of synthetic biology and comprehensive list of sector participants, funding agencies and other stakeholders
  • Surveying European and American leading sector participants and other stakeholders in the synthetic biology research, industry, and government communities
  • Conducting a comparative analysis of the review and survey results
  • Detailing proposals on how to maximize effectiveness of NEST funding within synthetic biology sector
  • Developing a detailed report of the project findings and disseminate to relevant Commission representatives and wider public
